Alcohol Withdrawal

Alcoholism is a chronic disorder in which a person is unable to refrain from frequent and excessive consumption of alcohol. Alcohol withdrawal is nothing but a set of symptoms that occurs with the elimination of alcohol when he is addicted to it.

Causes and symptoms

Most of the people who tend to withdraw from the addiction, does not suffer from any symptoms. But those who are addicted to it and tend to stop the habit all of a sudden are the ones who suffer from the withdrawal symptoms.

Any addictions that are eliminated gradually don’t show many symptoms. While stopping it all of a sudden do have adverse effects.

The commonly occurring symptoms of alcohol withdrawal include headache, dizziness, disturbed sleep, stomach upset, shivering, anxiety and sometimes increased pulse rate and body temperature.

Medical treatments and management for withdrawal

The most important step towards breaking the ‘alcohol habit’ is the willingness of an alcoholic to do so. He must make a firm resolve to give up the habit. The most effective way to treat alcoholism is to build up the body’s nutritional integrity so as to prevent cravings for stimulants like drinks.

In the beginning of the treatment, the patient can be given a suitable substitute to relieve the craving if and when it occurs. The best substitute for alcohol is a glass of fresh fruit juice. Once the person relishes it and feels the good effects of it, he will try to give up the addiction. All refined foods such as sugar, white rice, macaroni products, strong condiments, white flour and meat should be avoided. The patient should eat several small meals a day in preference to two or three large ones. Smoking should also be avoided as it increases the desire for alcohol.

Also, those who are depressed and engage in such activities should engage themselves in other interesting activities and develop a positive approach to life. Those malnourished can have vitamin B supplements.

Also one should adapt to plenty of rest and outdoor physical exercises.
