Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is most common cause of cancer in women.

Medical therapies are now an important component of the treatment of almost all stages of breast cancer.

It is diagnosed as a result of abnormality seen in a mammogram, a lump or change in the consistency of breast tissue can also be a warning sign of the disease.

Causes and risk factors

Epidemiologic data suggest that genetic, endocrine and environmental factors may be involved in the commencement and promotion of breast cancer growth.

The relatives of breast cancer patients are at some increased risk of developing breast cancer; first-degree relatives (siblings, parents, and children) have a two to three fold increase in risk compared with the general population. As many as 5 percent of all breast cancer patients may have inherited a specific genetic abnormality contributing to the development of their breast cancer.

Early age of menarche, late onset of menopause, nulliparity and late age at first pregnancy appear to be independently associated with an increased incidence of breast cancer. Since both diet and exercise may affect both age of menarche and the regularity of the menses, it has been suggested that this effect of diet and exercise, may explain, at least in part, variations in breast cancer among women in different life-styles.

Age at full-term pregnancy is a more important determinant of risk than the number of pregnancies. Compared to women with first pregnancy before age 18, the relative risk of breast cancer is doubled if the first pregnancy is delayed until after age 24 and about quadrupled after age 30.

The risk of breast cancer is actually higher among women with their first pregnancies after age 30 than among nulliparous women, suggesting that early pregnancy is protective while late pregnancy promotes development of the disease. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that events between menarche and the first pregnancy are critical in determining the lifetime probability of developing breast cancer.

Environmental factors also play a role in the manifest of the disease.

Those who are subjected to frequent hormone administration such as estrogen replacement therapy for post-menopausal symptoms or oral contraceptives for birth control would either induce or promote the growth of breast cancer. Oral contraceptives in use more than 10 years may increase the chance of breast cancer in women before the age of 45. Those who use hormonal pills excess more than 4 years before full term pregnancy are also at a higher risk of the disease.

Symptoms

The commonly seen symptoms are tenderness of the breast, swelling or mass (or feeling of lump) in the armpit, swelling of the breast, discharge from the nipple etc.

Those in advanced stage of the disease, suffer from symptoms like sudden weight loss, loss of appetite, shortness of breath etc.

Cancer according to Ayurveda

Cancer can be co-related with ‘Arbuda’ according to Ayurveda. It is a disease that involves all the three doshas.

Here, the noxious substances are high due to a relatively low ‘Agni’ or digestive fire according to the Science. The causes of cancer may be due to erratic dietary and lifestyle, sedentary habits, ignorance and also lack of spiritual purpose or effort in life.

So one is advised to maintain a proper and balanced life style, like moderate exercise and healthy diet to prevent further complications. And if one is adapted to such lifestyle, they can be free from various health hazards.
