Chaste Tree

Vitex Agnus-Castus Verbenaceae Also Called Monks' Pepper

A Native of the Mediterrallean, chaste tree grows ill at the subtropical zones of the world.

Parts used

Berries

The berries are picked when ripe, in September and October.

They are dried, then used to make liquid and dry extracts, which must contain at least 0.2 per cent of the active components to be effective.

Constituents

The chaste tree berry contains an essential oil, labdanes (diterpenic), iridoids, flavonoids, alkaloids, vegetable steroids and fatty acids.

Medicinal uses

Chaste tree preparations are known to be effective for treating problems that arise from malfunctions of the pituitary gland, which secretes some of the hormones that are involved in controlling the menstrual cycle and in stimulating ovulation and the production of sperm. The plant can therefore be helpful in treating various menstrual problems, including premenstrual tension, absence of periods, pain and infertility due to poor or a total absence of ovulation.

Research has recently provided scientific backing for the medicinal powers of chaste tree berries. In Germany and the Czech Republic, scientists have demonstrated their effectiveness in easing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, including breast pain. Also, further controlled trials of a homeopathic chaste tree preparation, involving women who were experiencing fertility disorders characterised by very light or no menstrual bleeding, resulted in the restoration of the menstrual cycle in most participants, and pregnancy.

Cautions

Chaste tree can sometimes trigger allergic reaction . If this occurs, see doctor.

Excessive use of chaste plant preparations may affect the nervous system, causing a prickling sensation across the skin.

Do not use at the same time as antipsychotic drugs that block the action of the neurotransmitter dopamine or drugs (for conditions such as Parkinson's disease) that boost dopamine levels.
