Artichoke

Description

A large, thistle-like perennial plant, which originated in the Mediterranean region, it produces edible flower buds and is sometimes known as globe artichoke. It is now widely cultivated in temperate climates, including in the USA where the plant is grown commercially, chiefly in California. The flower-stems grow erect and attain the height of 4 to 6 feet. They are each terminated by a large globular head of imbricated oval spiny scales of a purplish-green colour.The whole plant has a strange stink and a burly sour taste.It was used as a food and medicine by the ancient Egyptians etc .Cynarin is measured single of artichoke's chief biologically dynamic chemicals. The whole plant contains sisquiterpene lactone cynaopecrin and inulin. The leaves contain cynarin. Hepatic activityt of the leaves is due to polyphenols such as cynarin, caffeoylquinic acid derivatives and flavonoids. The plant is inculded in endigenous compojmnd formlatons given for viral and drug induce hepatitis. There are several varities named in seed lists but the kinds most generally grown are those known under the names of green globe. Imature flowers heads of which the fleshy recpectacle and bse of the involucral scale is edible and is most delicious vegetable . It can grow only in a deep, moist, rich soil

Uses

All plant is useful in hepatobiliary dysfunction and digestive complaints, such as sensation of fullness, loss of appetite, nausea and abdominal pain ,dyspepsia,irritable bowel syndrome , high cholesterol, as well as for liver, gallbladder. It is also very useful in control cholesterol . All parts of the plan stimulate digestve secretions, specially bile and used for the treatment of gallbladder problems. Plant is used as diuretic in dropsy. The plant is also used against atherosclerosis and for lowering cholesterol level. The extract gave mixed result in preventing alcohol induced hangover .The whole plant is useful in liver and gallbladder suchas jaundice, hepatitis, arteriosclerosis ,dyspepsia and chronic albuminuria.In brazil is given this plant for high cholesterol, hypertension, anemia, diarrhea (and elimination in general), fevers, ulcers, and gout. The dried leaves of the plant is useful for increase bile production .The whole plant is in useful in stress, madness, depression, and other nervous conditions.

How to use in different diseases

The water soluble extract is used for liver and renal diseases for its cholagogic and choleretic actions. As tincure is useful in appetite such as lack of craving and cholesterol such as to reduce blood lipids, serum cholesterol and blood sugar. The tonic is helpful in liver poblems like stimulates gall bladder, promotes bile flow, jaundice, hepatitis, arteriosclerosis,liver insufficiency, chronic albuminuria, anemia. The juice is to treat urinary inlammation, infections, stones, etc
