Description
A native of the sea cost of tre mediterranean now extensively cultivated in Eruope and America and know as sugar beet.. It is also cultivated in gardens in many parts of india for sake of its flesh roots and leaves . It is two types one is white and second is red. It is a Annual or biennial herb and it can grow up to 1.8m tall. The flowers are very small ,green or reddish , with five petals and leaves are long with heart shaped.The plant require acid, impartial and essential (alkaline) soils and can grow in very alkaline and saline soils. The beets owe therir medidcinal uses to an active principal betin. . It is rich in iron and also contains vitamins B1, B2, C and the minerals potassium, manganese, phosphorus and silicon. Although it is normally the root part of the plant that is eaten, in fact its leaves are a very good source of beta carotene. Leaves contain quercitin glucoside, a vitexin combination with glucose, xylose, and 3-hydroxytyramine, b-sitosterol, and a suite of organic acids etc. The leaves are eaten raw as salad or cooked The leaves are nutritionally superior to roots and are a good source of vitamins and minerals. The plant contains alkaloids of which betaine is a mild diuretic and emmenagogue.
Uses
Leaves of the white variety are used as a pote herb and substitue for spinach . Beet has a number of useful medicinal properties. For instance, it can be used for purifying the blood, improving circulation, promoting menstruation and stimulating the bowels. Beet can also be helpful for the treatment of liver problems. Some healers recommend beet for intestinal cleansing of parasites. In addition, it can help calm nervousness and is of benefit in vascular congestions. The root is useful in fever and constipations. The beet leaves are given for wounds, cuts, scars, inflammations, bleeding etc. . It is also helpful in tumor , blood pressure, ulcers, soreness, and cancer disease. The Leaves and roots used as an emmenagogue.Beet is also useful in blood, digestive system and digestive system such as indigestion, acidity, gastritis and heartburn .Beets are usually orally as a supportive therapy in the treatment of liver diseases and fatty liver. The jucie is useful in sniffed up the nose for headache and toothache . The juice of the white beet is good for liver.It is applied oto the temles it stops inflammation of eyes. It is mixed with oil and alum is helpful for burns. A decoction of the root is very beneficial in constipation and haemorrhoids . The red beet is is valuable in uterin diseases . Externally the decoction with a little vinegar added heals the itch , cleanses scruf and dandruff from the head and is excellent for all kinds of ulcerous and running sores. The decoction is useful in tumors of the intestines.The juice of this plant is very beneficial for tumors, leukemia and other forms of cancer such as cancer of the breast,intestines,rostate, rectum, spleen, stomach, and uterus. It is also useful in anemia and jaundice and increase the flow of blile. The juice is also to treat obstructions of the liver and spleen. The juice of the beet is helpful in blood pressure such as lower blood pressures,heart trouble, and varicose veins. Beet juice combined with carrot juice is very effective in kidney and gall bladder problems such as urinary infections, kidney stones , bile problems etc. The water of the beet is applied to skins problems such as acne , redness, itching eczema, boils and inflammations etc .
