Bishop Weed

Botaeanical Name -: Trachyspermum ammi

Description

Bishop weed is small plant, , annual shrub, spongy fine hairs, , grayish colors with egg shaped fruit.. It can grow up to 2 feet with a round branches which is wrinkled and empty A Middle Eastern herb commonly used in Yemenite and other Arab folk medicine, it contains the glycoside khellin, which has been found to reduce the pain of kidney stones by relieving muscle spasms caused by their pressure. The fruit in addition to protein (17.1), fat (21.8), carbohydrates (24.6) and mineral matter (7.9), contain sugar , tannin , flavone , and sterol. The seed contains a phenolic gluco, 2- methyl- 3- glucosyloxy -- 5-isoprophyl phenol. The principal constituents of the ajowan oil are the phenols mainly thymol and some carvacrol. This herb found in Madhya Pradesh , Gujarat , Utter Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan etc .It is used in the Unani system of medicine as boost of the body's resistance. It contain Calcium, iron, phosphorus, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin. The Bishop weeds are the pungent spices with amazing taste. They are also used in ayurvedic medication to heal diseases connected to the digestive tract. This plant is harvested from February to March. It is used as mouthwash, gargle, or toothpaste preparation in dentistry

Uses

This herb is useful for , Diarrhea, Dysentery, Dyspepsia, Cholera, Colic, Indigestion, Respiratory disorder, Influenza, Cough, Cold, Migraine, Rheumatism. The seeds are useful for migraine. The dried fruit of this herb is given for tympanitis, constipation, colic and helminthiasis. The root is very beneficial for fever, urinary infections, urinary inflammations, stones and cystic and other conditions. Thymol is powerful antiseptic and antifungal . It is also known to alleviate the pain of angina pectoris by dilating the arteries of the heart. It is very useful for digestive problems and other an antiemetic. The seed is useful in cholera, flatulent colic, diarrhea, atonic indigestion and stomachache.. It is also useful in nursing mother. It is also useful in wounds, cuts, bleeding etc. The fruit is also useful in other purposes such as curries, pickles, biscuits etc. The seed is useful in gastrointestinal ailments. The oil is useful as fungal diseases for skin eruptions such as itching, eczema, and other conditions.

How to Use in Different Diseases

The herb is helpful in earache. About half a teaspoon of the seeds is heated in 30 ml of milk till the core of the seeds fill the milk. The milk is then clean and used as ear drops. It decreases blocking and relieves pain. Bishop weed oil is useful for rheumatism. It should be applied on the affected parts.

The oil is useful in cough, cold, asthma, and expectorant in emphysema and other respiratory ailments. The leaf juice acts as anathematic and hence useful to kill the worm’s intestines. The aqueous extract of the fruit is a popular remedy for diarrhea in Indian medicine. The aqueous portion left after the separation of essential oil is known as Omum water and given in flatulence and gripe especially in children. The powder is very beneficial for indigestion, stomach troubles. The powder is taken one teaspoonfuls once time a day. Omum water is to treat flatulence and is antispasmodic in colic and flatulent dyspepsia. A poultice is useful in asthma. An infusion is recommended for acute pharyngitis, sore and congested throat and hoarseness. A tea forms is to treat urinary conditions such as infections, inflammation, kidney stones, bladder stones and , other complaints . A poultice of boiled roots is useful in rheumatism, gout, arthritis and sciatica. The ointment is applied to gout, piles, burns and sting bites.

Dose and Preparations

  • Oil, juice, powder, poultice, tea

  • Infusion- 15ml

  • Tea- 2 to 4gm

  • Powder-3 to 6 gm

  • Oil – Twice daily

  • Juice-5to 10ml
