Description
A perennial plant, native to North America it grows wild from Maine to Missouri,
mainly on hillsides.The rhizome contains triterpene glycosides including actein,
cimigoside, cimifugine and racemoside, isoflaones, incuding formononetin, isoferulic
acid , volatile oil , tannin.The rhizomes and root constituents of black cohosh
dos not seem to affect hormonal levels such as edtradiol,LH,FSH and prolactin. It
contains aromatic acids, resins, fatty acids, tannins, starches and sugars. It is
a perennial plant and it can grow up to five feet in height. The root contains 27
-deoxyacetin, an active ingredient with oestrogenic like activity. Studies have
shown that black cohosh can increase oestrogenic activity and thus alleviate the
symptoms of menopause. Some experts consider that plant based estrogens in black
cohosh may stop osteoporosis.
Uses
The root is used in bronchial and rheumatism diseases. It is toxic and abortifacient.
This herb is useful in kidney disorders, malaria, malaise, rheumatism, and sore
throat. In traditionlly this plant is recommended for gynecological disorders such
reproductive organs ,infertility, menstrual problems, inflammation of the uterus
or ovaries, potential miscarriage, and relief of labor pains. And other this plant
is useful in lung conditions such as cough, cold , asthma and chest infections ,
neurological disorders such as tension, hysteria , memory loss, epilepsy, and other
conditions and rheumatism. The flowers are useful to kill insects.
The herb is useful for menopausal symptom and inflammation with pain in gouts, arthritis,
