Description
An annual which grows wild on sea cliffs and cultivated land, mainly in England and Wales, although it has been introduced into Scotland and Ireland. It is found alsoWest Africa, but is now grown all over India as well. It can grow up to 30-120 cm . The leaves are long with heart shaped and flowers are whitish or greenish with petals .The fruit are hanging cluster with oval shaped. The berries contain steridal alkaloid glycosides, solasonine, alphaand beta- solanigrine, alpha and beta - solamargine, steroidal saoigenins, diosgenin and tigogenin, solasodine and solasodine . It contains minerals and vitamins presents in it include calcium, iron, phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin etc.Solamargine and solasnine are present also in leaves.A berry has a flat exterior that is originally green, but afterward becomes black as it matures. This berry is juicy and contains several flat seeds that are yellow or brown. The root system consists of a trim taproot that branches regularly The total alkaloid content of fruits and leaves are 0.101 and 0.431% respectively . Uses
The whole plant is useful in enlargement of liver and spleens and in cirrhosis of liver . The flowers are useful in cough, cold,asthma, chest infections, other respiratory conditions The leaves are beneficial in hot to swollen testicles. It is also used in insect bites such as snake sting, scorpion sting etc. Solanine is a powerful protoplasmic poison acting upon amoeboid organisms and ciliated epithilial cells. Fruits are tonic, diuretic and useful in anasarca and heart diseases , when attended with swelling of the legs and feet. Black berries , leaves and young stems have all similar properties, altertive and diuretic .The fresh leaves are useful in ulcer, burns, wounds, cuts, bleeding , itching, swelling , itching etc .The whole plant is remedy for chronic skin disease such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, redness, itching, rash skin, wounds etc . How to Use in Different Diseases
The paste used as poultice to herpes and rheumatic joints gout, rheumatic swelling and skin diseases . The fluid extract from all portions of the plant is recommended in dropsy, heart disease, skin diseases,piles, gonorrhoea, inflammatory swelling and chronic cirrhosis of the liver and spleen. A syrup of its useful as cooling drink in fevers and to promote perspitation. Decoction of the flowers and berries is useful in cough . The juice is used in ringworm, gout and earache. The raw juice is helpful in digestive problems such as diarrhoea, dysentery and other conditions . It is also useful in stomach troubles, flatulence, colitis , peptic ulcers, stomach aches. A decoction of its very effective in urinary disorders such as urinary infection, inflammations, kidney stones, increases the secretion and discharge of urine. etc. The whole plant is to treating reduces excitement, irritation and pains
